Counselor Training Course Description:
40 Hour Domestic Violence Facilitator Training
Domestic Violence 40-hour initial training is the training required for certification as a facilitator of domestic violence offender groups. The course defines domestic violence, including the many forms of domestic violence and the difference between male and female offenders. The impact of domestic violence on victims and society is discussed. The course includes strategies for treatment, possible areas of resistance, and the etiology of domestic violence. Common roadblocks to treatment along with tips for dealing with those roadblocks are also presented. This class also deals with the ethics of treatment and covers the required law and ethic requirements for licensure. Also, this course covers the community involvement and treatment that occurs with domestic violence treatment.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the seminar, participants will be able to:
- Basic knowledge of domestic violence: history, overview, nature, definitions, types, causes, and impact.
- Important knowledge regarding victims: impact (mind, body, and relationships), patterns, why they stay, safety, shelters and community resources, and the role of a community coordinated response to domestic violence.
- Apply and understand the knowledge of laws and legal proceedings for offenders, including restraining orders, court policies, law enforcement response procedures, case-flow, risk assessment, probation department policies and regulation, the San Diego DV Treatment Standards, and the actual laws affecting domestic violent offenders.
- Understand and practice evidence-based treatment protocols for offender groups, including recovery-oriented approaches, trauma-informed care, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and strategies for effective group dynamics.
- Apply understanding of substance abuse patterns and treatment, including nature of substance abuse, patterns of various substances, effects of substance abuse, treatment options for addictions, the biology of addiction, and implementing a Level II program for DV offenders with a substance abuse disorder.
- Understand and apply information on cultural implications including patterns, statistics, barriers, and bridges to treatment.
- Comprehend group content offender groups, including the distinction between male and female, the process of running DVRP groups, self-care practices for counselors, gender roles and socialization in society, privilege, patriarchal societies, re-victimization vs. resilience, and the pattern of multigenerational abuse.
- Understand and practice intake and assessment practices for DV offender groups, including reviewing paperwork requirements, understanding intake procedures required by law and best practices, and assessment tools commonly used

No refunds are allowed for registrants’ canceling within 7 days of the training. Registrants may email requests for consideration for cancellation in the event of unusual circumstances, however, there is no guarantee of refund (at least a minimum cancellation fee would be applied). In the unlikely event that AMC cancels this course, a full refund will be issued within 7 days of cancellation.
